In Madrid you can see many different supermarkets. Small ones, like Dia or Carrefour Express and big ones as Mercadona, Lidl.
Where to look for the nearest supermarket?
For sure You have one in your area, just search for it by google maps! Put the name od supermarket you are looking for and I am sure that You will find lots of them :)!
The problem is it’s not easy to find Mercadona in the city center. Normally it’s located in neighborhoods around the center.
How to choose supermarket for You?
If you want to make big grocery I would recommend to go to Mercadona. It has a lot of products, fruits, bread, vegetables, half-prepared or ready food and also You can find there cosmetics and cleaning products. I would say it is the cheapest supermarket and that’s the reason why is almost always crowded…
Lidl is also cheap and has a good quality, sometimes you can find there real greek or Portuguese products because of its ‘special weeks’. You can find there something that You would never find in Mercadona, clothes! Surprisingly those clothes are not bad! Lidl sells leggings, shoes mostly sportive ones but not only! Everything depends on the week, clothes are changing at least every month… Sometimes you can find really cool, cheap and stylish clothes!
Are you looking for fresh and good quality fruits and vegetables?
This kind of food is better to buy in specialty shops. The Spanish name for them are Fruteria, mostly that’s a small shop only with fruits, vegetables, and spices. Many shops are located in Lavapies, but every district has more than one! Just look around next time when you will get off from metro or bus and search for it near to your house. You can also try to look for it on google maps by putting ‘fruteria’ but it’s not that easy…
What about bread?
Spanish bread frequently gets old after one night… There are some Bakery’s but it’s not so common. Also personally I cannot feel a big difference between bread from Mercadona or Lidl and bakery one. Maybe my bakeries where not that good or maybe it’s just the Spanish way to prepare bread…
And this shops named Alimentacion?
Those small shops are everywhere and you can buy there almost everything :P! But the price could be surprising… Depends on location the price grows, in the city center for sure you will pay 0.80 eur for a bottle of water (normally around 20-25cents) but on the other hand it’s not so expensive. You always can buy there some alcohol drinks, but remember that after 22.00 they can tell You “NO”! Anyway, this shops can save your stomach from starving because Alimentaciones are open longer than other shops, till 22.00 every day, doesn’t matter if it Saturday or Sunday.
